“It Was Like J-Bay Out There!”
A formidable wildcard bid if ever we’ve seen one.
The wave featured in the above video, eponymous wit the scurvy-prone Captain Jeffrey, has a name that persistently flickers on the tongues of star-crossed surfers. Go to any coastal locale in the world, find a right-hander with a bit of offshore wind, and we can nearly guarantee that some overzealous lot-lizard will be whispering comparisons to the mythical J-Bay (hopefully Jordy isn’t in earshot).
Jeffrey’s Bay is the benchmark for right-handed, high-performance surfing and — possibly —for self-expression. Through surfing’s evolution, it has provided the platform for icons like Tom Curren, Kelly, Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith and Mikey Feb to showcase that hi-pro surfing doesn’t have to be all double pumps and poo-stance. It can be beautiful too.
Enter Adin Masencamp.
22-year old Cape Town local and QS gladiator. Precise regular footer, not averse to a bit of power surfing. The kid vanquished Jordy in the final of last year’s Ballito Pro and based on the above footage, he’s not done there.
Conveniently aligned with the impending approach of the beloved J-Bay CT event (which needs a wildcard, cough cough), Adin has released “Elevate”.The result of a three-day Eastern Cape strike mission, “Elevate” is a beautifully captured rendition of a rail-to-rail bender at 6-foot J-Bay.
