Olympic surfing has a different energy.
No man is an island.
Competitive surfing is generally-speaking, a pretty selfish sport. Weighing on the shoulder of one’s performance is endorsement deals, fame, personal goals, money and mating prospects. The motivations to surf well are therefore mostly inspired by self-interest.
The Olympics changed that.
“It’s like nothing else. When that flag went up I felt like all of Australia was right there with me,” says Owen Wright.
