Hackers Post Deep Fake Of 2x World Champ Tom Carroll Praising Fraudulent Crypto Scheme

Tom Carroll has two instagram accounts. One professional facing, the other personal. The latter, @tomcarrollcollection is a ‘Personal collection of moments I’ve seen through a lens since 1979’. This morning it was hacked by a fraudulent crypto schemers who used deepfake software to make it look as though TC was promoting their racket himself. See below.

Ever seen the video of Barack Obama calling Donald Trump a “complete dipshit”, or Mark Zuckerberg bragging about having “total control of billions of people’s stolen data”, or Jon Snow’s moving apology for the dismal ending to Game of Thrones? If you answered yes then you’ve seen a deepfake.

Deepfakes are synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. While the act of faking content is not new, deepfakes leverage powerful techniques from machine learning and artificial intelligence to manipulate or generate visual and audio content with a high potential to deceive and undermine trust. 

TC on his professional account reassured followers the video was the result of a hack and has subsequently abandoned the account which is still currently active. See below. Stab’s IG was also hacked last week, where 1000’s of automated messages were sent to followers asking to download a cute video with the message, ‘this took us 2 hours to make. We hope you enjoy.’

The AI firm Deeptrace found 15,000 deepfake videos online in September 2019, a near doubling over nine months. A staggering 96% were pornographic and 99% of those mapped faces from female celebrities on to porn stars. Mischief-making is only likely to increase said Henry Ajder, head of threat intelligence at Deeptrace to The Guardian, “The world is becoming increasingly more synthetic. This technology is not going away.”
