A tragic shark attack ended in a fatality nearby popular surf beaches in Sydney.

According to the SMH:

Emergency services were called to the rocks off Little Bay beach about 4.35pm on Wednesday to reports a swimmer had been attacked by a shark. By 6pm, police confirmed in a statement that officers had located human remains in the water.

The shark was believed to be a Great White up to 5 metres in length. Unreleased video footage shows the attack last more than 40 seconds less than 15 metres from a popular fishing spot at Little Bay in Sydney’s East.

It is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963.

Police believe they know the identity of the person involved and the next of kin have been informed. The man was not a local to the area but “swam there nearly every day,” according to Randwick MP, Michael Daley.

Beaches from Bondi down to Cronulla have been closed for 24 hours following the incident. Randwick council lifeguards will patrol beaches on Thursday for any further shark sightings.

Our thoughts go out to the friends and families of the deceased.
