Puerto Rican Surf Star Tears Hamstring And Breaks Scapula On Air-Drop Gone Wrong
Rolo Montes follows Parker Coffin’s lead and gets properly smoked.
Editor’s note: gore warning below. If you don’t like blood, don’t scroll.
Rolo Montes charges hard (see: SEOTY entry and Saturn part). The trouble is, when you send like he does, you end up in situations like the one below.
During this last Caribbean swell, Rolo found himself going late on a double-up just before dark, at a sketchy wave he wouldn’t normally surf on this angle.
The result? A Puerto Rican smackdown to rival Parker Coffin‘s Soup Bowl beating — which happened on the same swell, just 909 km (565 miles) apart. Who knows… maybe they even got smoked on the same swell line.
When we heard what happened, we called Rolo up to get the details.
“We had a crazy few days of huge swell, but this was the first day that was clean and perfect. We had a really fun, long morning session, and then went back to a different wave in the afternoon.
I didn’t think I was even gonna paddle out, because it was a really sketchy angle for the wave. But, I saw one of my friends got a good one and was like “ah fuck it, might as well try” and then I got flexed.
On my last wave, just before dark, I fell on the drop. My back-foot slipped — I think that’s when I pulled my hamstring — and then I went over in the lip straight into the bottom. I hit my back near my shoulder really hard. In the moment, I knew I’d broken some bones — I still can’t really move my arm. I went straight in and my friends all helped me out, It was a scary moment.
I was really dizzy when I got to the rocks, almost passing out. My friend Christian drove me straight to the ER. Turns out, I broke my scapula and pulled my hamstring in my left leg. Not gonna have to get surgery but gotta take it easy for the next few months. My back also looks like it was attacked by a tiger.“
Heal up Rolo. We’re expecting another hammer of an edit next year.
