Australian Surfer Dies After Sustaining Head Injury In Telo Islands
The tugboat driver from Geraldton was a skilled surfer + father of three.
Jeremy “Jezza” Wann, a devoted father and tugboat driver from Geraldton, Western Australia, died on Thursday surfing in the Telo Islands. Wann, 48, was surfing with his son and friends when he reportedly struck his head on a reef and was knocked unconscious, according to the West. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he could not be revived.
Mr. Wann, a lifelong surfer and father of three, is survived by his wife, Rikki, their sons, aged 17 and 16, and their 12-year-old daughter. In a statement, the family expressed their profound grief, describing Mr. Wann as a man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. “Jeremy made his parents proud and was always there for his sister. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him,” the statement read.
The family also extended their deep gratitude to the three friends, Daniel, Jay, and Josh, who were with Mr. Wann on the trip and ensured that his son Mason returned home safely to Perth.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed that they are providing consular assistance to the Wann family. “We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a DFAT spokesperson said, adding that the department is offering support in coordinating with local authorities for the repatriation of Mr. Wann’s body to Australia.
In the wake of the tragedy, friends of the Wann family have rallied to offer support. A GoFundMe page, organized by family friend Dee Wilson, has raised over $40,000 in less than 48 hours, far surpassing its initial $15,000 target.
“Our best friend and brother, Husband, Father, and Son — Jeremy Wann has sadly passed away in a tragic surfing accident in Indonesia, doing what he loved the most,” Ms. Wilson wrote on the fundraising page. “Loved and respected by all who knew him, we want to raise funds to assist with the repatriation process and to support his family during this extremely sad and difficult time.”
The outpouring of support underscores the deep impact Mr. Wann had on his community. The funds will aid in bringing Mr. Wann’s body home and supporting his grieving family during this challenging period.
