An American Psycho-Inspired Surf Horror Film
A devilishly handsome outlaw swaps fins for a circular saw in ‘Bloody Mess’.
Stealing from over the fence isn’t the most elegant form of theft. Just ask Bonnie and Clyde, Ned Kelly, Jesse James, or Robin Hood how much work it took to become romanticized outlaws.
In the cutthroat world of surf fashion in the 2000s, Quiksilver staffer Jamie Tierney recalls the rampant copying: “Everyone was ripping each other off—it was ridiculous. We’d do photoshoots in secret because if Rip Curl or Billabong saw what we were working on, they’d release their own version the next week.”

We’ve all been guilty of coveting our neighbor’s goods, or in Tierney’s case, the latest 4-way stretch Diamond Dobby boardshorts. The solution? Borrow from outside the surf world to spark something original.
A recent creative example is Perfect Designs, who just released the American Psycho-inspired surf horror film Bloody Mess. Written by Gustav Olsson and Lucas Lecacheur, the film was shot in Sweden. The board itself was shaped underneath a skate ramp in Copenhagen, with help from Bertram of Wondercraft Studios, while the team slept on a fishing boat.
