5 New Surf Podcasts Worth Listening To

The internet was supposed to democratise everything and send us all skipping into an information laden utopia, but alas, the opposite is true.

However, despite it making it impossible to have an intellectual conversation with just about anyone, what it has done is open doors to A) Anyone with an idea and a voice having a go, and B) Public people, who were traditionally guarded/misrepresented in the media, being able to tell their own stories in their own words.

You’ll no doubt be aware of the forerunners of the podcast genre like Ain’t That Swell (boy were they quick out the gates), and hopefully our own weekly offering The Drop (new ep just dropped!), but for anyone who’s in the market for more surf-slanted audio to drown out the noise, here’s five other pods more than worth your time.

Still Noise

Still Noise is a surf-adjacent creative allsports podcast hosted by South Coast surfer Jake Mckeown (a man who, as well as being good at yarning, can do this). Whilst not strictly surf (Jake’s had tattoo artists, bull fighters, travellers and musicians in the hot seat too), a number of surf heavy hitters such as Tosh Tudor, Russ Bierke, Shane Borland and most recently Noa Deane have sat down for lengthy, candid convos too. Well worth a listen to hear some of surfing’s finest speak with rare frankness.

Catch Still Noise on socials, Spotify and Apple Music.

The LAGO Podcast

Billed as the ramblings of a “has-been” (Zac Wightman) and a “never-been” (Findley James), the LAGO pod is a totally fun look at (mainly competitive) surfing by two accomplished young surfers in their own rights, who have all manner of current pros on speed dial. The boys pump out regular takes on Tour goings on, getting all manner of guests on to join in the fun. Jai Glindeman, Lennix Smith, Connor O’Leary to name a few, taking totally fun angles on such contentions issues as the notorious Nias burn.

Catch the LAGO buys on socials, YT and Spotify.

Beyond The Lineup

From a couple of impossibly attractive Americans comes Beyond the Lineup, a fresh pod that aims to give perspectives from all aspects of the surfing experience and industry. Decidedly more polished than some of their Australian counterparts, as is to be expected, the pod has so far featured such diverse characters as the Us Olympic Surfing Medical Director, former Quiksilver head designer Eric Diamond and former Gotcha (in the Arch years) team manager Mike “Happy” Cruickshank.

Catch Beyond The Lineup on YT, Spotify, Apple and IG.

We Shouldn’t Be Friends Pod

One of the enduringly awesome things about surfing is undoubtedly that an old geezer and a young woman can be genuine friends, hang out and go surfing, with nothing sinister whatsoever involved. Which is the exact thinking behind We Shouldn’t Be Friends, a surf nattering marriage between legendary surf journo Nick Carroll and surf filmer/photog Hannah Anderson. A great mix of inter-generational banter with top tier guests (NC’s got one of the best little black books in the game), it’s a welcome bit of fun, with some genuine journalistic insight thrown in.

Catch the unlikely duo on IG and Spotify.

The Jamie And Mason Show

Hardly hidden (it’s on JOB’s colossal Youtube channel) but a gem none the less, in case you missed it, Mason Ho and JOB talking candidly is nothing short of a riot. From Mark Healey face-planting onto a turtle to Makua lifting the lid on the pot-slinging legacy of the surf industry, if you’re after full surf industry up skirting and spicy opinions from the heavy hitters then dive into the back catalogue and gorge.

Catch the chaos on YT, IG, Apple and Spotify here.

The DropStab Podcasts

What’s an article without a little shameless self promotion, eh?

As Stab High Sydney looms next Friday and Saturday, October 10th and 11th, this week’s episode serves an appetiser for what will surely be a both joyous spectacle and a financial and liver apocalypse for all involved.

Oh, and did we mention two world champs are in the comp? How will they stack up against the world’s best free surfers and pool ponies? It hasn’t gone down yet, so don’t expect answers, but Buck and Mikey are here to fill the gap.
