This Wave Only Breaks Once Every Few Years, And It’s Not Where You Think

Plus, Matty McGillivray and LOB are spotted sans-jersey in the wild.

At 12:22 of the above edit, something weird happens: a tube is not made.

Which is fine, surf videos feature close-out clips all the time. But this clip is different, it’s the moment we realized that the final section of this video was filmed during the same swell as the final section of Stab’s own Zipper film. The wave is just too sinister not to recognize — something like an evil HT’s meets NSW South Coast.

The only filming locations that were specified were… Indo. For the sake of ethical gatekeeping, we won’t disclose where any of these locations are, especially the last section, but we will say that they aren’t all in Indo (note: one section has 4/3s and booties in it).

“Goggles” features Louie Hynd, Toby Mossop, Liam O’Brien, Matthew McGillivray, and Voltaire Sola (truly great name).

It’s the first time in a long time we’ve seen any freesurfing from CTers Matty Mc and LOB, who in terms of numbers are middleweights (World #18 and #19 respectively) but in terms of cache among those in the know are well-loved and respected. LOB’s style, Matty’s talent for upsetting top seeds, and the shred humility between them makes them fitting friends. Take a look at Matt’s tube-to-flick at 1:20 if you only have 10 seconds to spare.

Matt McGillivray, when not trying to beat whoever is donning the yellow jersey.
