Greta Gerwig Would Love This Surf Edit
A lesson in “les femmes contre le patriarcat” with Coco Ho, Steph Gilmore, and two Stab Highway stars.
The traditional all-male French surf edit consists of 3 things: a French pop song, Huntington-esque beach breaks, and naked girls.
In Coco Ho’s latest clip, she inverts this tired, archaic motif and — even if she didn’t mean to — parodies it, showing at least 10 old man butts in the first sixty seconds.
It’s a little like how Hollywood director Greta Gerwig uses stereotypical “man things” in Barbie to exemplify male folly: “To be honest, when I found out the patriarchy wasn’t about horses, I lost interest anyways,” Ken admits.
But, I’m a man, so perhaps my analysis of the Barbie movie and Coco’s edit is equally fallacious.
Anyways, like the matriarchal “Barbie Land” of Gerwig’s film, this 3-minute video shows an all-female cast slicing their way through opposition, whether in the form of less-than-stellar surf or voracious French crowds.
The “cast” is the She-GOAT/Electric Acid Surfboard Tester Steph Gilmore and Stab Highway Europe team leaders Maud Le Car and Juliette Lacome.
Also, pay attention to the boards that Coco is riding here — weird, winged twin fins that seem to allow her the speed to do A-grade surfing in C-grade waves. More teasers regarding her alleged new surfboard label?
Quite probably.
