The Walters Brothers Are Very Determined To Make This Greg Webber Manta Ray-Inspired Monster Work

Inherently flawed but occasionally serviceable.

If you haven’t checked out Harley Walters youtube channel yet, you should.

Each episode follows the 15-year-old Angourie young-old-soul’s quest to salvage dusted anachronisms from years past, and revive them with new school surfing.

It’s bloody entertaining and the shaper interviews provide historical insight as well as the often left-of field thought process that drives evolution in board design.

There are few, if any, shapers with more eccentric tendencies than Greg Webber and his nature-inspired creations. In this clip, Greg talks us through his thoughts on this 35-year-old, 31.4 L, 5’6” manta ray-looking monster.

“I was just thinking to link the concave into the fins. There’s nothing brilliant about that. If you keep extending the concave into the bottom of the board it could function as a fin. There’s something lovely and neat about that,” says Greg.

He then talks sharks, dolphins, helicopters, and the necessity of dorsal and pectoral fins to stabilise the rotation of a plane.

“However, the manta-ray inspired wing-tip is much more exciting because you’re incorporating the whole surface into something that is like a fin. But, and it’s a big but, is that the fucken thing (manta ray) moves. So we’re retarded in a way because we’re trying to achieve something that’s got stability like a shark or a dolphin dorsal fin but with the dynamism of a manta ray.”

Watch Harls and big bro Dakoda try and make it look not retarded with varying degrees of success.
