Last Saturday, Spanish surfer Oscar Serra lost his life while surfing Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido. He was 22.

Spanish-Basque surfer Ainara Aymat had been traveling with Oscar at the time. We asked her to shed light on what happened that day, and provide some details about who Oscar was as a person. Here’s what she had to say:

He was an amazing human. Beloved by so many people. He loved surfing.

His dream was to surf big waves, and he was going for it no matter what.

We have been traveling together since I left Costa Rica [in May]. We went to Nicaragua for 3 weeks and then we decided to fly to Mexico and get some footage for a project I was filming. Zicatela has always been his dream wave since he was a kid, so after getting the best of our sessions in Barra, we decided to go to Zicatela for a week.

The second day we woke up early and he went for a surf. He paddled out and he didn’t even have time to sit down when the biggest set of that morning came right to him. He didn’t think it twice and went for that one. He had a really late drop and a big wipeout that left him unconscious. He passed two waves underwater, and by the time the life guards took him out of the water, they weren’t able to revive him.

I’m lucky that I had the chance to spend the last few months with him, and see how happy he was.

It’s clear that Oscar was a great surfer, and was loved by many. Surfing lost a special member of its community. Our hearts are with his friends and family.

Rest in peace, Oscar. You will be missed.
