Four Pieces We Like From Billabong’s New Surfadelic Line

For the little rave-head in all of us.

Surfadelic by Billabong makes people worldwide (read: your author) want to drop some acid and go disco dancing.

The vibrant colors and structured silhouettes of Billabong’s Surfadelic collection are a sharp departure from the neutral shades and baggy shapes that have dominated fashion this year.

It’s not hyperbole to say that everyone, at this point, is over the lifestyle changes we’ve had since the pandemic started. Even the psychos who decided an unprecedented global crisis would be the perfect time to do a complete self-improvement regime are wanting to ditch the green juice and go on a bender.

There’s the same trend in fashion. At first we weren’t complaining about wearing sweats and a hoodie every day. But now, most of us would jump at the chance to wear anything besides loungewear or basics, indulge in something splashy, and go dancing in a crowd.

The collection pays homage to the creative culture of the 70s and the trippy visuals that were popular at the time. But there’s no getting around the fact that the psychedelic era was a legendary party scene. It wouldn’t be a stretch to expect that something similar will emerge in the next year. You know what they say…after the plague came the renaissance, and after the great depression came the roaring 20s.

Billabong realized people are fucking sick of wearing shapeless neutral colors and want something fun and vibrant in their lives.

Below are some of my favorites. For now I’ll keep the party in the living room, but I’m practicing my moves and keeping my fingers crossed for this summer.

Surfadelic Billie Bralette Bikini Top

This abstract pattern bikini top wouldn’t look out of place at a rave or in the lineup. The straight-cut neckline makes it more passable as a shirt than most bikinis. I could see it paired with a pair of black baggy pants, sneakers, a jacket, and some jewelry and worn in the city, or with some classic washed denim at the beach.

Cheeko Fleece

This jacket elevates a comfortable staple with some thoughtful tailoring. It’s still a baggy fleece but a cropped length, elastic at the waist and wrists, and a mock neck collar makes it stand out from your regular shapeless hoodies and pullovers. It’s perfect for giving the illusion of being put together even when you’ve just rolled out of bed for a surf check.

Whirlwind Windbreaker Jacket

The menswear style cut of this windbreaker balances out the faded purple-blue-white color palette and makes it a piece that anyone could rock. I’m biased because of my background as a tomboy who couldn’t find anything cool in the girl’s section, but menswear styles in a women’s collection are always a yes in my book.

Sol Searcher Fixed Waist 2″ Boardshort

These lilac hot pant board shorts do evoke questions of whether function was sacrificed for fashion. But they get points because I haven’t seen any high waisted boardshorts in a while. I’d have to try them to see if I’d really be comfortable surfing in it, but I do know that in my experience the shorter the board short the less thigh chafing. Regardless of their functionality, these would also fit right in at this imaginary post-pandemic party I keep talking about. So, Billabong, you down to host?
