Listen: The Sounds Of Binge Drinking w/ The Goons Of Doom

The Goonies release their first single from the upcoming LP, Black Skull Bong.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Full transparency, the single is called ’24 Bottles Of Beer’. And as always with the Goonies, it’s an eardrum tearing three minutes of impure noise. It’s the sound your brain makes after you’ve just finished your 15th schooner of piss, and is also pretty reminiscent of how your head feels the next morning.

The Goons have been blowing eardrums for over a decade, and aren’t slowing down anytime soon. They’re still relentlessly snapping strings, smashing tins, and pelican-ing beers into each others gobs.

24 Bottles of Beer is about what it sounds like. Coming up with any excuse you can to blast into a carton and eliminate any inhibitions you previously had.

Australians are aggressive beer drinkers with just about every occasion imaginable yet another excuse to hit the sauce. Births, deaths, weddings, funerals, sporting events, tough day at work, team won the game, in a shit mood, in a great mood, made a sandwich, found five bucks, woke up this morning… they’re all the excuses we need to rip the scab off a frothie and drain that bitter amber nectar.” As Vaughan Dead penned in the press release.

But as much as it appears to be promoting the sauce, Vaughan insists there’s a deeper and more thoughtful side to the cut.

“I can imagine people thinking it’s a song that glorifies drinking.” Vaughan said “But it’s actually a piss take on that. I’m always tripping on the manic energy people put into getting fucked up. I mean, it’s definitely not an anti-drinking song so I wouldn’t say it’s addressing the matter, it’s just stepping back and observing the way we rip in, which is pretty fucken hard.”

I’d try and do the song some literary justice, but I myself am nursing a colossal hangover which a morning beer isn’t negating.

Listen to the tune up the top, watch the interview with chief Goon Ozzie Wrong down below, then go and pre-order the album over at iTunes, or maybe even get ya hands on a physical copy.
