How Many Cameras Are Currently On The North Shore?

Click or Miss Vol. 8

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This week’s churning of the content conveyor belt has brought you an all Hawaiian version of Click or Miss.

With Sunset cancelled, it’s fair to assume the Google search frequency for ‘flights from Honolulu’ has gone up on Oahu. While some may go, there are many reasons to remain on the North Shore (a shot at $50k following surfing’s worst fiscal year in memory being one of them).

With the noticeable uptick in surfer vlogs over the past year, and so many of those creators congregated in one place, the question must be asked: how many cameras do you think are on the North Shore this year?

While interesting, this question is likely the equivalent of asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsy pop. The world may never know.

A COVID Friendly Surf Competition

Channel Subs: 9.15k

Like/Dislike Ratio: 40/0

With Sunset now off and the Triple Crown all digital, what are the world’s best to do when the waves turn small? Socially-responsible, COVID-protocol-following tag-team events of course. Come for Griff’s health warning, stay to watch an incredibly subdued version of competitive surfing (you know you want it).

Jamie’s Worst Wipeout Of The Year*

Channel Subs: 683k

Video Views: 225,846 (75,282 views/day)

Like/Dislike Ratio: 6,363/111

Jamie takes his numerous Catch Surf crafts out to Keiki for a good ole demo-session. He may not have made a single wave, but that doesn’t mean much when surfing what he describes as ‘the world’s gnarliest shorepound’. Jamie claims he copped his worst wipeout of the year this session, leading us to wonder whether ‘this year’ means 2020 or 2021.

Behind The Scenes Of Italo’s Pipe Masters

Channel Subs: 36.7k

Video Views: 55,727 (13,932 views/day)

Like/Dislike Ratio: 2,811/10 or 281.1 likes per 1 dislike

Italo posted his first vlog-style video just six weeks back (on November 30th) and has gained an impressive 10k subs in that time. For context, the Cola Bros, who have been on a historic familial heater since arriving in Hawaii, have yet to amass 10k subs total. And that right there is the power that comes with being a Brazilian world champ.

This edition takes you behind the scenes of the Pipe Masters, where Italo posts a semi-final appearance. The highlight comes when Italo takes off deep on a wave at Backdoor, falling and banging his lower back on the reef. The reason? He was up against Jeremy Flores, who eats those waves for breakfast, lunch, and souper. A tactical Italo should have everyone on their toes whenever competition inevitably resumes.

Another Ridiculous Haleiwa VTCS Entry From John

Channel Subs: 672k

Video Views: 35,992

Like/Dislike Ratio: Unavailable

The entries are rolling in for the Digital Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Last week John John sent warning shots across the North Shore with his first Haleiwa entry. This wave is almost as good, easily a 10 on its own, and worth your immediate attention. Click here to see all the entries to date and view new ones in real-time.

Leo’s 30 Board Hawaiian Quiver

Channel Subs: 10.2

Video Views: 15,992 (3,998 views/day)

Like/Dislike Ratio: 455/3 or 151.6 likes per 1 dislike

We try our best to integrate a variety of selfie enthusiasts into Click or Miss, but a time-honored Hawaiian quiver breakdown is just too good to pass up. Leo’s one of the many surfers whose go-to shaper (Christian Bradley) is at times supplanted by Eric Arakawa between the months of November and February. Leo seems to favor Arakawa’s RP model, which our Mikey Ciaramella enjoyed thoroughly in his 3-board quiver test from the North Shore shaper. You can’t take any chances when your career’s on the line, and it’s safe to say Leo eliminated any board-oriented varial with his voluminous quiver.
