Watch: Griff, Cole Houshmand And Friends Go Ballistic At Home Between Events

We all remember how remarkable Jacob Vanderworks film Feels Like Yesterday was.

As described by our Editor-In-Chief Mikey Ciaramella;

‘I experienced a sense of full-body electricity — equally enthralled and in awe by what I’d seen — but mostly just happy. Happy that surfing is a part of my life. Happy that someone cares enough about surfing to make a film like this.’

In the comments on that film, Jimmy Wilson tidily summed up Jacob’s impact as a filmmaker.

“I hope people properly appreciate what Jacob and this crew are doing,” he wrote. “The quality of surfing, filming, and editing seen in this is of the highest level. Credit to them for using their offseason to push their surfing levels, risking injury, and spending their own money to fund things like this. If the future generations all grow up idolizing Medina, then we’d be stuck with wave pool instagram reels, with flyaway airs, edited like bad music videos.”

The edit above is a bite-sized appetizer in comparison to one of Jacobs main course films, but it tastes just the same. 

“These little clips are super joyful,” says Jacob, when I call him. “Whenever the boys are home and there’s waves, I 100% want to keep making these. They’re just never home,” he laughs.

“We filmed this probably two weeks ago. Jake Davis, one of our best friends, was basically running heats with those guys and coaching them. All those clips were from them running drills together. The whole thing started because Griffin had such a shocker in El Salvador and called Jake and was like, “We gotta start doing something,” and they kinda rallied everyone for it.”

In terms of long-form projects, Jacob is currently in the process of filming and editing Kolohe Andino’s impending STEKO film, which will premiere in late August.

“That one’s pretty sick,” says Jacob. “It’s pretty cool. It’s different, I think.”
