Earlier this week, we reported on an incident at the site of women’s CT event #1, Honolua Bay, where a 56-year-old local man had been attacked by a shark on what was supposed to be the morning of the finals.

“This was at like 7:50 am at Keiki Bowls,” Sage Erickson told Stab. “We heard the guy screaming. It was a huge bite off the back of his thigh—like thigh and back of the leg. Based on the bite mark and the board, it was at least a 12-footer. They took the skis to get him—thankfully the skis were there. They got him and took him to the inside. They were doing compressions on him, but he wasn’t responding.”

The victim's board.

The surfer was then brought to a local hospital and put into emergency surgery. According to reports from the WSL yesterday, the man had made it through surgery and was in stable condition, though he remained in the ICU.

This morning, we learned that the surfer has passed away. Stab offers its condolences to any affected parties.

The WSL will be finishing the remainder of the event on the island of Oahu, most likely at Pipeline.
