“This summer I went to Fiji with John John and spent time working with Eric Knutson and Spencer Klein and that whole team,” Chris Malloy told me, in a recent conversation. “I was in Hawaii four or five times in the editing bay with those guys working on John’s stuff. I was blown away by Erik. He’s old school, he’s a jack of all trades, and he’s super fun to be around.”

“Working with the Florence crew has been super fun because they’re like, ‘What do you think, uncle?’ And I get to be like, ‘That’s sick. How about we try this too?’ And they’re like, ‘Rad, let’s do it.’ It’s been a real treat for me. John’s a smart kid, man. He’s a super smart kid. And, of course, the surfing’s good.”

Above, you can watch the second episode of John John Florence’s ‘VELA’ series — this one featuring brothers Nate and Ivan.

The first episode is also live here.

“My brothers came down just before the crossing to Vanuatu,” writes John. “It was really cool for all of us to be going somewhere new together with no idea what to expect or what it would be like. That doesn’t happen a lot with the three of us so that part of it was really fun, whether it was figuring out the different reefs we had marked, or exploring between the islands.”

This episode is more focused on the sailing, adventure, and local community aspects of John’s journey, but there’s still a certifiably firing surf session plopped straight in the middle (set to Leonard Cohen no less.)

“We were blown away by the surf community here, and how committed they are,” writes John. “It was so inspiring to surf with so many kids who just love surfing for surfing. Every day, every chance they get. That was the highlight for me.” Photo by Erik Knutson.
“If cyclone season didn’t push us out we would’ve stayed a month longer. I’m already excited to go back if we ever get the opportunity.” Photo by Erik Knutson
