The ASP Is Back (Sort Of)

The Billabong-backed Anti Surf Project launches its Euro tour in Ericeira.

The idea could be a minefield, but that’s usually where the best dancing is done.

Last year, Billabong opted to bankroll a collective made up of other collectives rather than polishing one of its individual crown jewels. The ultimate pyramid scheme?

The Anti Surf Project was born out of a sit-down meeting between Jordan “Djoko” Sevellec and Billabong Europe’s Head of Marketing, Valentin Bourgeon.

But that’s enough biz intel.

The Anti Surf Project shares its acronym with the late Association of Surfing Professionals (RIP) and, in the words of Djoko, they “back artists, surfers, and skaters like Nothend (Lisbon), Eyeson Fam (Florianópolis), and Keks Machine (Biarritz). We throw parties, drop edits and collections nobody asked for — basically, do things our way.”

This weekend, the gang is throwing the first of a month-long party, though certainly not the first in their unprofessional careers. These, we’re told, often carry the under- and overtones of early-2000s Euro-leg ragers. Because, ASP.

The main reason for this gathering of mess, noise, and general debauchery is the release of their new film Pirates, Not Porate.

PNP documents an entire year around the globe, interspersed with acting skits by its main cast under Djoko’s direction: Tibo Manson, Diego Torre, Mathis Martinelly, Jordan Noodles, Sassá Catarino, and Pedro Lemos — mostly filmed by Baptiste “Brat” Derrien and Théo “Titigee” Preuilh Gereaume, who also handled the edit.

The full crew will be present. You probably won’t bump into any CT demigods at the premiere, although Kanoa lives nearby if you feel like shouting loudly enough to wake him from his cryogenic chamber.

The first stop of the ASP Tour Euro leg kicks off at Adega Bar in Ericeira, before heading north to its spiritual home.
