Take A Look At Sage Erickson’s Domestic Bliss

Ventura is for lovers.

Ventura-born Sage Erickson is one of Stab‘s true perennial darlings.

She’s talented, stylish as hell, whip-smart, and damned kind. Over the last few years we’ve watched Sage mature through her post-teen reign in the surf world as America’s Sweetheart, through her first years off and on the ‘CT,  to the elegant, thoughtful woman, and first-time homeowner she’s become.

The extended stay at home this year allowed Sage the time to finally really settle in, get her humble Ventura abode dialed in (which entailed a heavy renovation). Sage also got to finally sort out her linen closet, with longtime sponsor Slowtide’s plush new home line, and to carefully place mementos from her year’s on tour and as a traveling surfer in their right place.

We caught up with her and her two handsome four-legged flatmates at their new Ventura home.

Stab: The pad looks amazing! Last time we visited it was still very much raw, but it looks like you’ve taken full advantage of the downtime to get the place dialed. How long have you called this house home?

This is the first and only house I’ve bought. I’ve been here for 3 years now.

It was an absolute wreck when I bought it. Luckily, my uncle is an amazing contractor, he runs a company out of Malibu. (Though to be fair, when I was looking at the house he actually suggested it was too much work for the price.)

I couldn’t help how much I loved the location and potential I saw in it.

My mom, and the best handyman ever, John, tackled 2 years’ worth of renovations while I was on tour and did all the fine-tuning. Pretty much every inch of it needed work.

How do you feel like you’ve made this place distinctly yours?

Just all the details sprinkled around. I’ve collected treasures from around the world and focused on those: unique little keepsakes with subtle symbolism—they hold a special place in my heart and they are just so specific to their countries.

I love having a worldly vibe. Cloth from Africa, art from overseas, tiles from Australia, vases from Bali…to name just a few. I don’t stick to a specific style.. just a nice blend of many.

What inspires you about your home?

I love that it feels at peace. I admire a calm sense of a home, a place to rest, feel inspired, and leave happy and energized.

I think my home is welcoming and loving and full of light. I’ve focused on an abundance of plants… a variety of stone, wood, water—all the elements that soothe the soul.

I don’t live in a mansion, it’s just what I need. It’s close to the ocean, the mountains are visible to the east, there’s no electrical poles or wires in sight and I have wonderful neighbors.

I love the community I live amongst. I love that I have access to Ojai where I was born, and all the waves in Ventura all within 5 to 10 minutes from each other. I’m super close to Los Angeles and LAX, without being in the actual city or feeling its (at times) suffocating effects.

It’s just the three of you in there these days? Bachelorette life looks good on ya.

It’s a 3-bedroom 2 bath, so living here with the dogs, I feel like a princess. My dad recently had a stroke and is recovering amazingly, so while I was in Mexico he house-sat and used the space as a place to heal and get back on his feet.

Did you always want your own space to share like this, where your friends and family feel really comfortable and you can play host?

I’ve always hoped that I can have a homegroup or regular night to host friends, have dinners, great conversations—just a really warm, safe space.

I’m actually a super private person, especially when it comes to my home life, so I’m continuing to try to grow and understanding myself in that way, but my mom, Jody [aka Jodes], started a regular get-together at her house and it’s really inspired me, just filling your home with loving people and creating a really welcoming atmosphere for others.
