Stab Recommends: 5 Pieces From Vans x Pilgrim’s Predictably Sleek Capsule
Blue, blue, blue.
Vans and Pilgrim Surf + Supply have an ongoing relationship, and their output has been flawless.
There’s been a limited shoe here and there (in particular this one, which I tried and failed to get my mitts on, just fyi), but this is the first long play capsule to our knowledge, and it’s just the right amount of putting your own bent on some classics, whilst keeping it universally wearable. Which isn’t as easy to pull off in a collab as you’d think. Especially when you’re tangoing with a brand as recognisable as Off The Wall.
If you’ve got a good pair of loose fit navy pants then you’ll wear them more than all others. It’s just a fact. The Pilgrim x Vans pair are the perfect shade of blue (a color which permeates the range), and the fit sits nicely on the Fubu – (t)ksubi scale.
The built-in fastener? Well that’s just a nice, convenient, touch.
Appropriating/adopting the iconic baseball pennant was a bold move by Pilgrim Surf + Supply. A delicate tip of the hat to their New York City roots, it’s become synonymous with the brand/store/movement.
Owning a shape is iconography at it’s best, and whenever you see a slice set at a jaunty angle, you know where it came from.
Looks good, makes sense = marketing 101.
If you pay attention to their Instagram then you’ll know that there’s a vintage arm to Pilgrim. The ’90s were a glorious time for shells, and no doubt some of the era’s flawless Patagonia and North Face jackets that’ve passed through the shop’s doors influenced this hooded rain jacket.
And it’s hard to find a flaw. The colour’s divine, the fit sophisticated, and they even managed to avoid the dreaded collab logo mash-up.
The Vans x Pilgrim capsule is ‘surf focussed’, so it makes sense that they customised a Vans Chukka. Barring a pair of Havis, they’re basically the shoe that you’d associate with surf, or rather checking the surf. The two-tone denim works nicely for a refined take on a true classic.
Bucket hats are trending, but it’s actually a practical garment. Especially if you live in Australia, where a day of casually running errands can leave you with third-degree burns.
Navy is the best colour for buckets (goes with everything… black’s too hot), and the Pilgrim x Vans offering has just the right amount of rim.
