Five Additions To The Stab Recommends Gallery
Meticulously curated.
This week’s Stab Recommends comes to you from as far from the Gold Coast as it’s possible to be.
Figuratively, literally, and geographically—Valparaiso, Chile. Whilst the surfing world’s getting far too excited about three foot electric-blue mush and free Corona/Michelob/Vonu/whatever it is this year, the rest of us continue as normal, quite content, 12,000km from the circus.
Normal means a weekly wrap up of material objects we use/love/have piqued our interest, and this week’s surfaced some real treasures. A collab between a shoe giant and a quaint Japanese artist, a collab between a recently purchased (former) surf giant and a man who’s (rightly) proud of never having done an honest day’s work in his life, a weekly rag whose output staggers any of us who’ve dabbled in print, and more.
Come browse.
A Perfect Vans Collab
Japanese artist Yusuke Hanai’s been dabbling in surf since Gravis, and that’s just fine by us. His style’s, hmm, Hergè via the Beautiful Losers? And it sure looks nice on a pair of slip ons. Grab a pair before you can no longer grab a pair.
Ozzie’s Fav Jacket
Lightweight bombers are universally useful. Whether you’re warding off a cool summer’s night or dealing with a temperate winter (get used to it!) the Burkey jacket’s the perfect slip on. Plain enough, with a leopard patch, courtesy of Mr Wrong.
Uber Exclusive, Uber Japanese
Yellow Rat makes limited numbers of exquisite surfing themed threads that are difficult (by design) to get your hands on. Their website is a .blogspot, and the lettering on this tee is nostalgic perfection. What’s not to love?

“Where y’get that vest from?”
Owning things others don’t is a great way to alleviate the feeling that you’re just another pleb dancing in time with everyone else. Volte rose from the ashes of West and make no-frills, quality neoprene. Stand out from your fellow vest-wearers.

A Bastion of Proper Journalism
If you subscribe to The New Yorker (and read it) you will accumulate knowledge and broaden your understanding of just about everything. It’s produced weekly, and the quality and sheer volume of the words within are just a remarkable feat of publishing. Doesn’t matter if it’s Tyshawn Jones’ new Caribbean joint in the Bronx, or the Battle of Raqqa, the NYer cuts to the point and reports the facts in style.
Do yourself a favour, expand the mind
