A Whole Heap Of ‘Head Noise’ In Sydney

Snapshots from the first screening of Noa Deane’s latest, ‘Head Noise’.

Noa Deane: love or loathe, there’s no denying he’s a fucking good surfer.

Thankfully, for the impatient amongst us, Volcom held a select screening at the Steyne in Manly Friday night for Noa’s latest flick, ‘Head Noise’ – a descriptive title for those of us who may have pushed the bar a little further than our morning selves could handle.

Noa and Mikey Mallalieu (the man behind the lens) have been working on the edit since Noa packed that heavily rumoured bomb at Backdoor during the shootout back in January.

“It all came together really quick, started off in Hawaii and we only got back from Bali [the final trip for the film] two weeks ago.” Mikey told Stab the morning of the prem. “Some of these sessions Noa was surfing up to 8 hours a day, he won’t stop until it’s done.”

It’s 14-ish minutes long and Noa modestly agreed “it’s the best [he’s] put out” post-premiere. Noa’s overtly conscious of the edits he releases as well, ensuring that his latest output surpasses, or at the very last, matches his previous edit. And you can be sure that ‘Head Noise’ surpasses ‘Pulp’ in more than just running length.

“Noa has a lot of input into the editing process, he knows what he wants from the waves included, up to the soundtrack.” Mikey continued. “It was initially intended to be longer – with interviews and profiles included – but the film turned out better this way.”

It starts on the North Shore, and ends off with footage compiled over two separate trips to West Aus. I won’t throw any spoilers in there at the moment, but for those too eager to wait until it’s online release August 2nd, there’s a string of US dates in the next couple of weeks.

And for those Aussies displeased with laptop and iPhone viewing, there’s a chance an Australian run of prems will occur in August too.

I’d fill in the gaps surrounding the above images, but they’re better left unadorned and unexplained, and the moments which weren’t captured on film are probably better left residing in the back of our minds than out in public anyway. All I will say is the only negative was the exuberant cost of an Uber back over that bridge…

And for Noa and Mikey, a 7am flight from Sydney back to the Gold Coast.

For those of you over the pond in the U.S. of A, the film’s worldwide premiere is happening on July 12th in LA, followed by a stint of other West and East coast tour dates – which you can scan below.
