Misfit’s Refreshing Take on Summer

Be bold!

First off whichever clever dick at the ‘fit decided to take their hessian team to Sri Lanka to shoot the campaign deserves an Xmas bonus.

Sure the surf’s not as good as Indo, but the backdrops are so much more interesting and less saturated.

The main thing you need to watch out for in Sri Lanka (apart from the very real possibility of the Civil War kicking off again or the increasingly real chance of another Tsunami; just assuming that there aren’t too many climate change deniers reading STAB) is the beers.

They’ve got a pretty laissez faire attitude towards things like proof alcohol regulations in Sri Lanka, and those Lions that come in the hefty brown bottles can be anywhere up to 8%, batch dependant. Which in layman’s terms translates to the most horrendous tropical hangover imaginable.

Going in cold to the menswear game’s pretty daunting. You’re faced with playing it safe and your gear looking like everyone else’s, or, being bold and trying to create an identity for yourself. Misfit have clearly placed themselves in the second column, and it’s just to rain praise upon the summer release because it’s fun, and because, well, at least they’re giving it a crack and doing something different.

The hero image of Jake Vinnie in blocked out print, white socks, slides and raspberry shades alone should be enough to entice you to leaf through the racks. But if you’re time poor (ha!) we’ve scrutinised the range so you don’t have to. Here’s five picks.

Fossick Shirt

The whole tee, trunks, slides thing’s liberating at the beginning of summer, but gets monotonous after a while. A little loose-fit, goes with everything number like this however, is the perfect remedy. Also, the feel of an airy button-up on sun-kissed, salty skin’s up pretty much the best feeling in the world.

Suspended short

Sensible length, good cut, tasteful branding and enough tech without being stupid, these’ll do nicely for all the water-based activities of summer. The “Sea Foam” tone is a refreshing change from the black/blue, possibly green trunks you’ve likely been sporting for the last few seasons. Although a word of warning, best to avoid these kinds of shades if your genes don’t allow you to tan.

Surrealism Tee

Looks vintage, isn’t. But, if you’ve tired of plain tees and are looking for a print that’s acceptable for a grown man to wear then this one’s got a blue tick. Googled “Surreal Love Affair”: doesn’t mean anything (unless I’m being dim), but the word “Surreal” looks might nice on a tee so surely that’s enough.

Transmit Glass Tee

Logo tees are have kept the surf industry fires burning for some decades now, and they’re a must for a new brand. Not one’s for just slapping the logo on the front and moving on however, the Misfit crew have added their own twist to the genre. The Transmit Glass tee’s cut perfectly, slightly faded, and the branding’s perfectly kitsch – like a search engine that’s been left out in the sun.

Rearer Toy Socks

The socks and sandals faux pas was all about the sandals, and now that we’ve embraced the comfort and easy access of slides it’s a brave new world. Three pairs in contrasting, bold shades greatly increases your chances of keeping the bastards together, and they’re fitted too. If you’re yet to experience the joy of fitted socks and spongey slides, then I implore you join the comfort revolution.

Go see more wearables and surfables here, and if you’re in the Sydney region, don’t forget Misfit are demoing boards out of their new Bondi Beach store tomorrow from 9am to 1pm.
