Is This The Most Gorgeous Surf Shop In Australia?

Befittingly, the new McTavish Outpost is a thing of true beauty.

Aesthetics and beauty—while their value can be hard to explain to those disinterested in fetish objects, for those who do, you simply know it when you see it.

This week, Stab got a first look at McTavish Surfboards ridiculously gorgeous new Outpost in Byron Bay, and wowza, is the place befitting of Bob and Co.’s legacy brand, richly patinaed hardwood floors and bright white walls lined with well-built, open-minded equipment drawn from Bob’s five decades of genre-defining templates, and shelves of slick, minimalist attire surely aimed at a more discerning dude than your average brand- and logo-heavy local haunt.

Over the last few years, McTavish has enjoyed a well-deserved renaissance, as the design pendulum has swung sweetly back towards many of the late-’60s and 1970’s designs Bob pioneered, and thankfully the brand has been poised for the opportunity, with BM still sprightly as ever, often putting ten-hour days in the bay. How rare and precious it is, to be able to get a board from the source, and the new downtown Byron location is a reverent and fitting space to feel them first hand.

“I’m stoked we now have a high street store on the groovier side of town,” Bob says. “Now you can buy or rent a beautiful handmade board just two blocks from the beach!”

McTavish CEO Ben Wallace was similarly thrilled with the convenient new location. “We’re excited to finally have a presence downtown. McTavish Outpost will stock a range of McTavish Surfboards—all handmade in Byron Bay, as well as McTavish clothing, accessories, gifts and art prints. We’ll also have an exclusive range of surfboards available to hire. Once we settle in we will also be holding exhibitions and events in the gallery part of the Outpost.”
