Get Conceptual This Weekend In Costa Mesa!
Al Knost and the Costa Mesa Conceptual Art Center host “Subjectively Speaking”
We at Stab love a proper Happening as much as anyone, and this weekend we’ll be enjoying just that, at Mr. Alex Knost and his lovely and longtime partner, Daniella’s gallery space, the Costa Mesa Conceptual Art Center.
For their fifth show since opening, they’ll be hosting Saara Untracht-Oakner’s collaborative performance piece, “Subjectively Speaking,” along with Knosty and Verge Bliss
According to Saara, “it’s an abstract, linear interpretation of a composition, played by all of the artists,” which we’ll do our best to explain: The walls of the gallery are wrapped in three strips of butcher paper. With a bold, black Sharpie in-hand, Saara will draw her interpretation of the music, left to right, circling the room as she responds to the chosen musical composition. This process will be filmed and presented Saturday night, while the other musicians, including Alex, perform their interpretation of Saara’s reactionary scribblings.
“After the show, there’ll be two listening stations,” Saara tells Stab. “One that’s the original piece that my interpretation is based on. The other one will be done by a composer based on the chart, with the video of me making the piece.
“After the opening, there’ll also be videos of each of the artists on Saturday night.”
Trust us, it’ll be an experience.
Located at 1930 Placentia Ave, Unit B3, Costa Mesa, the Conceptual Art Center “(sic) is a converted warehouse cum gallery, located in an alley, on the West side of Costa Mesa. The conceptual art center was conceived in 2015 to cultivate communion amid the confused and powerful forces at work, to intensify and accelerate creative endeavors.”
The show starts at 6pm and will surely go past the advertised 9pm…
Oh, and in case you’re wondering what the space looks like, here’s a clip from their recent event with the Campbell Brothers:
