Photolyfe: Luke Shadbolt

Celebrating Mother Nature’s rawest moments.

Welcome back to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Give thanks by studying each image with a more careful eye than ever!

Luke Shadbolt’s photography is intoxicating. It triggers a peculiar emotion; a mix of fear, awe and beauty. Following his feed you’ll travel through the tropics, the temperate, the frigid and the often overlooked gems of his homeland on the NSW Central Coast. His moments seem surreal, at times impossible, and we’re thrilled to have the gent here to feature in our Photolyfe series.

Mr Shadbolt is currently showing his latest body of work Acquiesce the Front at the Michael Reid Gallery, Standard House, 105 Kippax Street Surry Hills. Stab for one will be in attendance at the opening reception on Saturday the 25th of November. Here’s a little more on the show:

In his first body of work, Maelstrom, 2016, Shadbolt captured a series of sudden, fleeting, chaotic acts which produced an oceanic force of sheer primal ferocity. A duality that occurs in nature; creation and destruction in a single act. Reflecting upon these chaotic weather events of the 2016 El Nino incident, Shadbolt was prompted to examine the broader array of moments that fell before, after and in between these violent deliveries in his latest series, Acquiesce the front, 2017.
