This Is What Surfing At 16 Looks Like In 2019

Some groms flourish young, others take time to mature. Young Max Beach is the latter. While his contest results aren’t up there with some of the usuals you see here he’s got something often missed by today’s groms: a solid rail game, punky attitude and good taste in music.

Although anything but rap will do, when this edit came across my desk I asked the sender to tell me a bit more about him, Max is 16. He’s from San Clemente, rides Timmy Patterson surfboards and thanks to his coach Brand Gerlach has a love for Acne Studios. Max will be coming into his own the next few years… and like so many great sports heroes today, he’ll prove that getting picked in the fifth round ain’t always a bad thing.
