1,400 Miles, 20+ Hours Behind The Wheel And All He Got Was A Lousy $10k Check

Kevin Shulz tours the flyover states in “The [real] Road to Waco”.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’ve got a lengthy interview with Kevin Schulz dropping soon. He’s a smart young man. Insightful, considerate. Aware of his future, his career prospects, and what needs to happen to turn this surf gig into a sustainable profession.

It’s good stuff. Something you’ll enjoy reading.

But it ain’t ready yet. So you’re gonna have to make do with this fun little five minute vid about the road trip he took with filmer, Kyle Flath, from Southern California to Waco, Texas.

Google says that trip takes about 21 hours of driving. It’s over 1400 miles, winding across Arizona and New Mexico. Through desert and emptiness and rugged flat hellscapes. There’s some cool shit along the way. Not in Arizona, of course. Arizona is the worst.

Maybe I’m being unfair to Arizona. But I don’t think so. My experience in that state may be limited, but I’m dead certain it’s mainly inhabited by lizards, racist grey hair retirees, air conditioner repairmen, and raspy voice teen mothers. And I guess about a third of the population is Latino. Which is a fact of which I recently became aware due to the well publicized ‘white genocide’ inspired rantings of Arizona State Senator, Sylvia Allen.

A sane person rolls up the windows and guns the engine until they’ve left the state. Maybe stop off at truck stop to gawk at freaks. But you’ve gotta keep your wits about you if you’re gonna do that.

I’ve never been to New Mexico. I know they’ve got oodles of skateable ditches and an ample supply of stores flogging leather goods and turquoise jewelry. And SXSW. But that’s it.

There’s a reason we call them fly-over states. Only dire need or a youthful need for adventure would lure anyone within their borders.

Kevin and Kyle detoured to Corpus Christi for some saltwater action. Snagged some solid surf in subpar conditions. Though it might be good, by Texas standards. The old saying, “Everything’s bigger in Texas,” likely didn’t have swell in mind.

The show wraps up in Waco. Mr Schulz blows some minds with a flip, wins some money, the rain shuts it all down show. The copious quantity of tequila forced down his gullet by a fellow party-goer, post-Stab High, is not featured in this clip.
