Instead, the Brazilian flyboy carved up poor Jeff like a Jack O’lantern.

If five years ago someone told you Filipe Toledo dropped an edit with only one air, you’d scoff. But 2019 is the year of the rail, and the 2x J-Bay Champ is growing into a well-rounded surfing machine.

Filipe won three events in 2015 on the back of his ability to blast a 10 point ride off of any wave the ocean brings. With that being said, his rail work was often described as “developing”.

Since then, the now perennial world title threat has sharpened his blade, putting it to use at the Tour’s rail reliant stops. Weighing in at 5’9, 70 kilos, the fastest surfer in the world has learned how to utilize this mach-11 speed that’s turned his meat and potatoes into the rest of the tour’s soufflé. With a career best 2nd at Bells and another 3rd at J-Bay (he won the past two years), that “developing” rail is way past puberty and into full-blown adulthood.

Tap into watch ÁFRICA for a lesson in changing direction from one of the world’s top aerialists.
