We’ve Never Seen Somebody Go So Fast At Lowers

Even Herbie Fletcher would have to admit: Griffin Colapinto is the new King of Trestles.

Not since an enraged Jordy Smith returned home from his disappointing 2017 European leg, and promptly directed that anger toward the waves at Trestles – the South African disemboweling the point with some of the sharpest knife work we’ve seen to date – has anybody put out such an impressive Lowers edit.

And while Jordy retains the power advantage over young Griffin, it’s safe to say that Colapinto’s young legs have given him an insurmountable spring, leading to some of the longest, most-high speed bottom turns ever witnessed at Lower Trestles. It’s as if Griffin’s riding a motorized waterski, with which he could cross the entire English Channel if given one highline and a bottom swing.

Mayhem should be proud.

And ain’t it just awful that the year Griffin makes the CT, Lowers is stripped from its very schedule after a decades-long legacy upon the cobble rocks?

The 20-year-old San Clementine looked primed to make this competition his own by way of sheer speed and enjoyment, but instead Griffin will surf in the wake tub where his exceptional speed becomes moot, as the wave has but one perfect section that allows the rider not to get ahead or behind, but only to ride in the predetermined pocket.

Woe is us.
