Watch: The Unrelenting Relevance of Bobby Martinez

Bobby Martinez is often misunderstood.

While many find it easy to associate the man with 60 seconds of audio 7 years ago, truth is, he’s not jaded; in fact, he’s more vibrant than ever.

Does he hold strong opinions on surf matters? Yes. Does he ram them down the throats of every active scroller? No. In fact Bobby doesn’t care for connecting on social media at all.

According to Bobby, “The best things in life are private, so why share that with the a bunch of people you don’t know?”

“I’m not married or anything but it was honestly inspiring to see how much he loved his family,” said filmmaker, Dan Scott. “He has two kids so that was a big part of his routine every morning and day to day if he wasn’t surfing.”

For the two weeks we shot with Bobby at Tugun, on the Gold Coast, Bobby was up at 4:45am every single day. He’s eating well, still training, still psyched on chasing waves.

It was obvious that he takes delight trading the densely-populated hills of Santa Barbara for Queensland’s laid back sandy points.

Bobby’s an intelligent man, holds his friends dear and his family dearer, and despite anything he may have said in the past, still respects and appreciates the various shades of surf.

“When I look at my life and surfing, I wouldn’t change anything,” Bobby told Stab during one of our last passes. “I’ve travelled the world, I’ve met a lot of great people, I met my wife, and we have a daughter together, we have a family.”

Dive in above to ride shotgun with Bobby in the short film by Dan Scott for Stab and Monster Energy, a fine chance to refresh your acquaintance with one of surfing’s most unforgettable personalities.

Time and time again Bobby makes a rock solid case for running the four fin setup with his signature spring-loaded backhand strike.
