Is Filipe Toledo The Busiest Surfer On Tour?
Here comes his 19th nervous free surf clip!
Judging by the output of edits, Filipe Toledo is the hardest working man in the pro surfing. Hunkered down at a comfortable 14th in the world at present, for the moment the flying Brazilian’s world title fire has been quenched, so instead, he’s turned his attention to releasing more sizzling highlight reels than all his tour brethren combined. He’s winning!
He’s in Hawaii. He’s in Brazil. Like a good transplant, he’s selling out the beach breaks in San Clemente. He’s stepping-off at formerly secret spots in Mexico. Give the man a film crew, a halfway decent editor and a stiff air wind and Filipe’s formula’s on lock.
His new drop, entitled “Pop,” features Holy Toledo in Mainland Mex, spinning and soaring like you’d expect. About a minute in one’s left marvelling at his amplitude but wondering if he’ll ever stick a fucking landing. Is this finally one video too many? Has he jumped the shark? If this was a skate video he’d be slapped for showing that many fails. But at the 1:26 marks the clanging of crashing, jazzy cymbals give way to a smooth, melodic piano riff, and like that Filipe clicks into form. The waves get a little better, his make to bail ratio dramatically improves, and Filly flies.
