Jordy Smith’s Treasury Of A-Grade Clips

“Collecting Dust” for two years.

This footage has been on the shelf, draped in cobwebs until now. Over the past two years, these clips have awaited their release, so Jordy and filmmaker Blake Myers pieced them all together, hit the greyscale and pushed them out for our viewing pleasure. “It’s just a mixture of a bunch of waves that haven’t been used,” Jordy tells Stab. “They didn’t really fit in sections I put out in the past, so I thought, screw it, let’s put all together and send it out there. The surfing’s mainly from the Gold Coast of Australia and a bit from Hawaii back in December.”

In the monthlong gap between J-Bay and Tahiti, Jordy’s made good use of his time in the water and avoided the flat days of San Clemente as long as he could. “After J-Bay I went back to Cape Town for a bit and got some waves down there,” he tells us. “Then the US Open kicked off, so it was back to SoCal for a full week of madness. There haven’t been too many waves around. I’ve been cruising and training a bunch.”

With Chopes on the horizon, Mr Smith’s gearing up for one of the tour’s biggest thrillers. “I’ve been getting my boards dialed,” he says. “I’ll spend the next couple days training and watching the swell over there. If anything pops up before the event I’m gonna get on a plane and go.”

Upon inquiring who will win Tahiti and if this will be Wilko’s last event in the yellow singlet, Jordy says, “Well, hopefully, I win. That’s why I’m going there (laughs). But the usual suspects will do well. At this point, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be too big. So it’s up for anyone.”

“To be honest, I think this is going to be the deciding event of how the title race plays out for the rest of the year,” he continues. “Gabriel’s nipping at Wilko’s heels, John’s right there too. And, both those guys are incredible at Teahupoo. But, Wilko’s no flapjack. He has surfed amazing this year and if he can buckle down now and hold onto the position he’s in, I think he’ll get more good results in the later events since he’s in line for a world title right now.”
