Harry Bryant And 3:20 Of Very Enjoyable West Oz

“My favourite place in the whole world.”

“Our plan was to hold out for a Gnaraloo swell, and we were waiting for weeks,” begins Nathan Foster, the man behind shooting and cutting the above short, featuring Harry Bryant. “Haz really shines in big left pits so I wanted to get him into Tombies, but a swell never came and another spot was looking all time, so we flew over and linked up with Shaun Manners in Perth. We spent about a week camping in the bush. The plan was to continue the journey up north to another camp, but it was too hard to leave the perfect left we’d been surfing.

“We didn’t have waves the first day, so I was super keen to go check out some sites. I’m a bit older now and have come to appreciate a bit more of the nature side. We went to this gorge called Nature’s Window – so beautiful, and true grit Australia. It’s crazy how diverse our country is. Karaoke at the pub with the local boys is always a good time, too. We slept on the beach in front of the pub that night in our swags, I went to bed a bit earlier and could still hear Haz belting out a banger!”

For Harry, Western Australia is a good as it gets. “WA is my favourite place in the whole world,” says the man you’ll watch lighting up above. “I’ve been hanging to go explore that part of the world for ages. Watching Ry (Craike) at his local point was mind blowing, hands down the best surfing I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve grown up watching Ry and the Brown brothers my whole youth. Bumping into Craig (Anderson) and Ozzy (Wright) was rad too, sharing tubes with three of my favourite goofyfooters and washing it down with a few Emu tins in the afternoon – that’s what it’s all about.

“I can’t believe how spoilt rotten they are with surf there! A few sessions I was sitting out there on my lonesome wondering where everyone was. If there’s two knots of wind on it, it’s not even worth getting out of their Land Cruisers… Mate! If the Sunny Coast ever got half that good, I’d be packing a lunch and surfing all day.

“The pub scene is all time. Tuesday night is karaoke night: Midnight Oil, GANGgajang, Dire Straits, you name it. A few nights I set my swag up out the front of the Pub and got heavily involved. The funny part about that trip was on day one – we set up camp in the Caravan Park, but there was a Tractor Convention on and it was packed, so we moved camp to a spot deep in the bush, and turned a two-minute drive to the surf into a 40-minute mission through 4×4 tracks. But to be honest, that’s the best part of going on surf trips, and how it should be.”
