Now, here’s one of Stab’s favourite surfers, Jay Davies, gliding beneath the dreamiest WA spring perfection imaginable. West Oz was the state in which a surfer sadly lost both hands in a shark attack on Friday, and while that’s bound to put a bad taste in any surfer’s mouth, it’s a fact of surfing in WA there’s a lot of surfers who it ain’t going to stop. On a lighter not though, and more pertinently to this moment of perfection, let us pass the mic to the photographer, Kerby Brown, for some colour…

“I was in Perth for a wedding and a little window popped up on the forecast for some waves in the south west, so I thought it was a good opportunity to catch up with my good China’s Jay Davies, Dino Adrian and Jaymo Wright,” says Kerby. “Jaymo, Jamie Scott and I hit this beachie early this morning – we were all a bit shady from the previous night drinking but rocked up and it was cooking. I surfed straight up but also put my camera on the beach as the water colour was so blue I had to at least get one frame to take home with me as we don’t get a lot of clear beachbreaks where I live.

“As I was coming in from the surf Dino and Davies rocked up so I grabbed my camera and ran down the beach and swam out with them. There were some heavy slabs coming through. It was kind of like back door or Off The Wall on sand, with the bluest water. It was hard to be in the right spot but the boys were getting some mad slabs and I managed to stick it out long enough to capture some nice moments. This is an early fame of Jay hagging off the bottom; keep in mind he’s a big guy so it has to be a pretty solid wave for him to be throwing down a hag arch (soul arch). He got so pitted on this one. Davies is one of my finest China’s and also one of my fav surfers. It was a pleasure to share the session with the lads.”
