7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Just Outside Of Mexican Surf Hub

This morning, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca, Mexico, killing at least one person in its capital Huatulco.

Huatulco is sandwiched between to two famous surfing regions, Puerto Escondido and Salina Cruz. Here’s Surfline rewind footage of the earthquake hitting this morning. 

We reached out to the folks at Punta Conejo Resort (in Salina Cruz) for a report from the ground.

“Everyone is safe here,” they wrote. “It was a pretty strong earthquake, although it didn’t cause any serious damage here like the one we had a few years back. The epicenter was in Huatulco and there was a big landslide that blocked the road from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco. A few of the reefs in Huatulco got exposed but we don’t think it will cause a Tsunami. Still, we are on alert in case of any potential aftershocks.”

There is currently a tsunami watch issued for Mexico and Central America. We’ll report any updates below.
