Fun Boys The Sequel Is Up On The Interweb

A brief chat with Fun Boys CEO Harry Triglone about his latest motion picture.

It’s been a hot minute two years since the first Fun Boys full length; a fruity mix of fruity men having fun in the ocean doing spins, turns, and head dipping across Australia. Now, a couple years down the track, Harry Triglone, the CEO of Fun Boys Entertainment Systems has compiled his latest collection into an even longer full length.

The Fun Boys mantra is, as the name suggests, to have fun. There’s no moody indie tracks trying to portray a message, aggressive EDM penetrating your ear holes, or half-cooked interviews splayed throughout trying to make surfing seem like a proper sport. The films Harry puts out under the Fun Boys label are more a haphazard collection of good times which primarily revolve around riding waves and the occasional bong joke.

The latest compilation features the usual surfers: Creed McTaggart, Shaun Manners, Wade Goodall, Noa Deane, and even a brief cameo from the original fun boy, Kelly Slater. Harry has been putting the film together since he released the first fun boy incarnation in 2017. I guess you could refer to it as a passion project – as hideous at that sounds – as there’s no big corporate backing footing the bill for this proper full length.

To coincide with the release of this fine underground film extravaganza, we got on a line with Harry to chat about the film. You can read that below, and purchase the film for a measly $10 dollars after you’ve read about it – which is around 5% of what you probably spend getting blind every weekend.

A desert empty, the perfect canvas for a fun boys play session.

Stab: Harry, how you going man? Just finished watching, kinda feel like going surfing now.

Harry Triglone: [laughs] I guess that’s sort of the point. Happy to have it out there on the web now after a handful of premieres.

I was surprised it’s kind of an actual ‘full length’ as far as surf films go too — 36 minutes of compiled surfing footage ain’t easy.

That’s what I was hoping to do since I started getting footage after the last Fun Boys [in 2017]. It takes a while to get over half an hours worth of useable footage but I think it’s worth it. I didn’t want to post much of the footage online in other clips or on Instagram beforehand as well, other than the trailers this footage is unseen.

Even ‘long’ clips now average around 20 minutes, which is great, but I feel there’s still people out there wanting something closer to the older moves we grew up on.

Did you film the whole thing yourself?

[laughs] nah, that’s impossible. I got a lot of footage of Creed over in West Oz from Tom Jenno and a bunch of other footage off friends as well. The surfers helped out too. A lot of it is near home [in Northern NSW] and then other trips from other places over the last couple of years. Just friends surfing and having fun.

Is that the Fun Boys mantra?

Umm, a mantra, I don’t know [laughs]. I just wanted to make another movie that embodied surf movies from the 90’s, one that was a ‘full length’ too. A bunch of guys who rip, surfing, and having fun. I wanted it to be different from a lot of the clips these guys feature in as well. I didn’t want it to make it some arty statement, just footage of surfing with an eclectic soundtrack.

A lot of surfing right now just revolves around the WSL and the content they put out. Even the freesurf clips people put out are kind of serious. All that’s fine, but I want to show the funner side of it. It’s not a serious sport, let’s be honest.

I actually kind of want it to be a movie you could put on when you’re getting fucked up before going out or something. Something you could throw on at a party and the music would keep everyone going [laughs].

Yeah it’s a nice mix, felt like I was jumping between the Imperial downstairs [Editor’s note: a gay nightclub in Newtown] and what my housemate plays while smoking a joint thinking he’s black.

I had a bunch of tracks that I just sort of chose over the years for each section. I changed my mind several times for Creed’s section. Actually, footage wise I probably had enough stuff of Creed to have multiple sections or maybe just the whole film about him.

It was nice to see a bunch of Creed footage, been a while since we’ve seen much of him. Same goes for Wade [Goodall], he doesn’t release much anymore. Everyone froths when something gets put out with him in it.

Yeah I really wanted to give Wade a proper section. Everyone loves watching him surf and it was sick to have so much footage of him to put in there.

When I saw Wade in the trailer I thought we’d only cop a few clips as per usual, I was pleasantly surprised.

How’s the reception being with people paying for it?

Really good. I feel like people are starting to realise that we’re not asking much for these clips. A tonne of effort goes into making them and then putting them up for free just seems wrong.

For the past few years we’ve become so used to surf clips been plugged up online for free, but I feel like perspectives are shifting again and people are willing to fork out a few bucks for one. It’s like the price of a beer and it’s less for what people paid for a magazine with a DVD back in the day.

Fun Boys 2 is available to buy right here for $10 AUD, or spend over $50 on shirts and cop the film for free. Click on this link and watch it on your Sunday afternoon, or since it’s a public holiday tomorrow put it on for pres and drink yourself into a stupor while ogling at the quality of surfing going down.
