Nathan Florence and the gold rush of Pipeline, Hawaii

Shooting the world’s most photographed wave (ever) in a unique way isn’t the easiest thing to do. Sure, you’ve even seen this angle plenty of times before, but it’s still been shoot a whole lot less from up here than it has down front. One morning when the weather wasn’t excellent, photog Jason Corroto decided to trek the hill for a different vantage point. “As I was walking up in the rain I saw Johnny Gannon (Taj Burrow’s trainer) and Richie Vas (charger and UFC battler) running down it, doing their morning fitness,” says Jason. “I’m not sure how many times they nailed the incline daily but up and back was enough for me.” But, becoming short of breath momentarily was worth it: “The sun poked through the clouds on occasions and I was lucky enough to link this shot up with the light,” Jason continues. “It’s a beautiful view up on the hill above the school, which gives you a whole new perspective of the seven mile stretch.” Nathan Florence, brother of John and the man all the way down there dropping into this gem, has seen the seven mile stretch from plenty of angles too. This is one of his favourites. You can check out Jason’s blog, here.
