This Is The Last Time The Women’s CT Will Surf Honolua

WSL says: Maui event more expensive than Fiji!

Yesterday and today, the women’s CT enjoyed some of, if not the best waves ever seen in professional competition.

Thanks to a massive west-northwest swell and offshore trades during the Beachwaver Pro window, Maui’s Honolua Bay provided perfect six-to-eight foot right-handers with the more than occasional tube. Steph Gilmore won her seventh World Title and the entire Tour relished in the flawless conditions.

Sadly, this might be the last time we see the women surf at Honolua Bay in WSL competition.

According to a source from the WSL/World Professional Surfers Meeting this October, in 2019 the Women’s CT will move its final event from Maui to Oahu.

The main reason? Cost.

According to our source, the Maui event is more expensive to run than the Fiji Pro.

Over the years, despite its incredible price tag, the WSL has fought to keep this event alive because it gives women the opportunity to demonstrate their best surfing. Sadly, due to the League’s ongoing financial issues, they will no longer be able to provide this ideal platform for women’s surfing. Instead, the women will finish their season either at Haleiwa or Sunset, most likely alongside the men’s Triple Crown events.

Both of which are great waves, but they’re certainly not Honolua.

In other venue-related news, the WSL is apparently negotiating a two-year extension on the Margaret River event, which would secure Western Australia’s inclusion on the CT through 2021.

According to our source, the WSL is taking every precaution to ensure safety for its competitors, including increased government support and surveillance features, and an in-depth monitoring of salmon and other other shark-luring species. They have already changed the date of the 2019 event from early April to late May in order to avoid West Australia’s historically sharkiest month.

That’s it for now!
