Mikey Wright, rookie daredevil at Third Reef Pipeline

This photograph is given weight when you learn that the devil dragging paw and some ass into the face is 16-year-old Mikey Wright, the overachieving little bro of Owen and Tyler. This surprises y’pals at Stab for two reasons. One, he’s just a kid, and two, how’d he steal a set from the extremely militant local surfers? “All the guys went to Jaws so there was only five of us out. It was pretty easy to get sets. This was definitely the biggest wave I’ve ever caught,” says Mikey, who actually only caught one during the afternoon session pictured, on a seven-two owned by Mark Healey, and that was after an hour-and-a-half of sitting wide, working the whole damn thing out. Stab asks, has big bro ever offered any advice on surfing Pipe? “All he says is don’t pull back. Charge,” says Mikey. Wish-ish words.
