A 20kg Brick Of Coke Found Floating Off Australia’s East Coast

A good excuse to sit out on bombie patrol.

Do you pick up floating pieces of trash in the surf? Perhaps to save a dolphin from choking, save a swimmer from an eye-full of trash, or perhaps to bump your bank account up $7 million bucks?

A couple of kayakers in Trial Bay (just north of Crescent Head) in NSW had the opportunity to pounce on the latter of these, but opted for the safe and sensible route instead. What they paddled by wasn’t any old discarded plastic bag, it was a 20 kilogram brick of pure cocaine, that would’ve fetched upwards of $7 million on the exorbitant shores of Aus.

According to Vicethe kayakers discovered the floating brick while paddling around Trial Bay, but instead of scooping it up themselves, the group contacted local authorities who retrieved it from the water soon after. The brick has since been passed onto the Australian Federal Police who are investigating the toot’s origin.

And that’s a damn fine question.

Well, it was either a brick of blow or the missing MH370 black box. Photo: AFP

20 kilograms of nosé isn’t something that slips out of your wallet, or is blown away by an ill-timed sneeze, it’s more at home on the back of an offshore drug shipment. And that’s exactly where the AFP suspect this singular brick came from.

Back in July, a 600kg shipment of cocaine was seized off Byron Bay when it was dumped in the ocean. The AFP believe that this solo package may have originally been apart of this shipment and drifted south on it’s lonesome down to Trial Bay.

Despite this, the AFP are pursuing alternative explanations, “Any further information we can get from the public may help us establish how this parcel ended up at Trial Bay. If anyone saw something suspicious or out of the ordinary in that area, please report it. It could be valuable information to police,” Detective Superintendent Andrew Donoghoe said in a public statement, “A find like this is a concern to police, and we are thankful we were able to seize it before it caused harm within our community.”

The NSW mid-north coast isn’t the only place flowing with aquatic cocaine though, over the past few months the Fijian islands have also received a constant influx of coke bricks. As reported by Vice, bricks were first brought in by the tide on the isles of Lau, with over 100 having washed up on different beaches since.

So, if you’re a law abiding citizen who happens to be dropped in on by a floating brick, turn it in. Alternatively, find out what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a ill-considered $300 cash withdrawal – although you’ll probably just end up in prison.

Anyway, I’m going for a surf…and sitting way, way out the back.
