Ryan Callinan, Chile And The Perils Of Mother Nature

Flooding in the North, flooding in the South, deluge in the city. These are the conditions the Billabong team arrived to whilst filming their winter campaign back in June. For Chile, this ain’t a shock (excuse the pun), rather a recurring story – the country is an active earthquake zone, which has seen an increase in high magnitude earthquakes, extreme weather events and the destruction that inevitably follows over recent years.

Ryan Callinan, Joel Parkinson, Ethan Ewing, Otis Carey, Frederico Morais, Creed McTaggart, Italo Ferreira headed south out of Santiago in attempts to escape an unpredictable mother nature and search for waves, as Ryan very calmly explained in the four minute overview of their trip. This was a time to pull out the hoods and booties, and though the conditions and power outages threw a spanner in the works, it was never meant to be about the luxuries.
