John John Florence’s Unfortunate, And Rather Funny Snapper Rock Slip

“I slipped on the rocks a few days ago trying to kick sand at Kolohe while he was stretching,” John told Stab yesterday. “Thankfully no one got it on film.” However, somebody did.

When we arrived to the Goldie–which I guess I call it now–we were sent photos of John checking a sliced heel. And, in tradition of Stab Media(crity), we posed the question of whether or not it would hinder his performance. After watching him lose to Michael Wright from the Snapper sand, it did not. He looked in form; Michael just caught better waves. If it were vice versa, the result may have flipped.

But, that’s neither here nor there.

Talk of John’s rock slip after sending a toe full of sand to a stretching Kolohe Andino has sent smiles to the world tour’s collective face. Jordy Smith, Kolohe, multiple filmers, photogs and surf industry folk have told me just how lucky he is nobody filmed it (which, as Mr Florence can’t walk down the street without someone filming him, was astonishing).

While on the sand yesterday afternoon, being beaten down by the sun’s magnificent Southern Hemi power, John told me more of the same when prompted on the stumble.

“I slipped on the rocks a few days ago trying to kick sand at Kolohe while he was stretching,” he laughed. “Thankfully no one got it on film.”

The slip happened three days back, and in these immediate times, three days without a single Instagram post is enough to make one feel they’re in the clear. Today, however, via the vessel of social media, the clip surfaced.
