Kolohe Andino Is Our 2024 Stab In The Dark Star
You asked, we answered.
Back in December ’21/Jan ’22, Jack Robinson conducted his Stab in the Dark on the North Shore of Oahu.
Jack was the first SITD surfer faced with our Unlucky 13 conundrum — he was forced to eliminate a board upon first sight, without so much as wasting a grip or bogging a rail.
Unbeknownst to Jack, the board he eliminated would eventually be tested — just not by himself. That responsibility was granted to a surfer of similar size and ability, but with a very different manner of surfing — Kolohe ‘Brother’ Andino.
Brother rode Jack’s unmarked Town & Country (he thought it was a Cabianca) at fun-sized Rockies and Backdoor, then broke it down instinctively and decisively. It was, frankly, the best board analysis of the entire series. And our commenters wanted more.
Last year, we had the privilege of working with Olympic gold medalist and World Champion Italo Ferreira on Stab in the Dark. What Italo provided in energy and air reverses, he came up a little short on the analysis aspect of the project. It was tough conducting board interviews across two languages, and to be honest, we couldn’t keep the guy out of the water for more than five minutes at a time.
In Kolohe’s series, you’ll get the nuanced board breakdowns you’ve come to expect from the SITD OGs (Dane, Jordy, Mick) along with modern surfing and some very fun waves.
Oh yeah, that reminds us — we filmed this year’s Stab in the Dark in Indonesia. Not the Ments, like Jordy’s, but throughout Bali and the outlying islands.
“The waves are too good — we need worse waves to test boards,” Brother told us on day one.
And to the quality of the test subjects: “Some of the maneuvers on this board felt like some of the better turns I’ve done backhand or in my life.”
The final was also held in proper pumping surf, leading to a highly deserving winner. Stay tuned.
