Doughmore Beach, Ireland Is Saved From Trump’s Proposed Seawall

To the pleasure of the Irish, Donald’s sea wall has come to a halt.

“Under growing international pressure, Trump International Golf Links (TIGL) has rescinded their proposal for the 3km seawall at Doughmore Beach, Ireland,” reports Save The Waves.

In September, we did a story on Trump’s intended seawall at Doughmore Beach, which would have run 2.8 kilometres, reached 15 feet tall and consisted of 200,000 tonnes of rock dumped in a sensitive coastal sand dune system. Doughmore Beach is one of western Ireland’s more reliable beach breaks and the campaign to stop “Trump’s Irish Wall” was quick to gathered over 100,000 signatures, which was what they needed to send an appropriate message to local decision-makers.

“Trump’s decision to walk away from the seawall proposal is a huge milestone for the #NatureTrumpsWalls campaign, and we are very excited by this decision. We are proud to have brought worldwide attention to this issue and save Doughmore Beach from their ill-conceived proposal,” said Nick Mucha, Save The Waves’ Director of Programs.

But Trump’s persistent and the fight’s not over. He hasn’t been too busy playing president to devise an alternate proposal. The man does love his walls; he now wants to utilise a series of metal sheet piling installations with a rock armour fronting that will be burrowed below the “sacrificial sand overburden.” The golf course is also planning to move two holes, which seems like what they should have done in the first place…

“Our work continues as they consider scaled-back measures, but we are excited to spare Doughmore Beach of the monstrous seawall proposal,” continued Mucha.
