QS1000 Scores Better Waves Than World Tour

There hasn’t been a single heat on the 2016 WSL Championship Tour with the kind of surf that the opening rounds of the Mentawai Pro had yesterday.

With a veritable list of randoms in attendance for the lowly QS1000, Lance’s Right delivered what may be the best waves of the 2016 WSL year thus far. It was certainly better than Margaret River, Bells, Snapper, and lets just say it now, Rio.

“This groundbreaking event truly lives up to the WSL’s mantra of putting the world’s best surfers in the world’s best waves,” reads the daily recap with no hint of irony at all.

More accurately, it’s the WSL’s least competitively-successful surfers in the world’s best waves. How is it that the bottom rung of the qualifying circuit scores in the Ments while the CT’s been battered by mediocrity all year? It’s like letting the Bad News Bears takeover the Yankee clubhouse. With it’s gin-clear water, thin lips and precision shape, Lance’s is a workingman’s dream – a fact not lost on the QS grinders.

Pepen Hendrik 2 2

Pepen Hendrik having a very, very good time.

“This wave is so perfect, you just have to be smart and pick the right ones, the wave is so good,” said a thrilled Marlon Gerber, one of the higher profile surfers in the contest. “We have plenty of time to run the contest so we can pick the best tides which is so awesome.”

“It is so perfect here,” confirmed Indo-born, Oz-raised Oney Anwar. “This wave does a lot of the work for you.”

If Marlon and Oney are having this much fun at Lance’s, just think what John John, Gabriel and the big league boys could do out there.

Lineup Day2 Bennett

“This wave is so perfect, you just have to be smart and pick the right ones, the wave is so good,” says Marlon Gerber.

The WSL didn’t officially announce the contest until the last day of March, so it makes sense that it may have been a bit of a scramble to fill up the draw. But all the same, the CT’s been dreadfully boring this year and a wave like Lance’s would go a long way in raising the interest level.

Consider also the waves that the QS3,000 Pipeline Pro got back in February, and the quiet score that was the QS1,000 Rangiroa Open Pro in March. IN 2016, the QS is looking a lot more like the “dream tour.”
