John Florence For Outside Magazine Is Worth Your Time

A long read and a thrilling look at the production of View From A Blue Moon.

John John Florence is Outside Magazine‘s July cover star. For such a broad-topic publication, they sure love surf; Mark Healey appeared on the March edition’s cover, proclaimed as the best athlete you’ve never heard of, a sentiment Stab couldn’t agree with more from a non-surfer viewpoint.

Speaking of, what is it about the better non-surf publications that makes them do surf so well (excluding the cringeworthy majority)? It must be the fresh eyes, the lack of assumed knowledge. Or, the lack of bro-ism. Many surf journalists won’t ask certain questions or report certain details, lest they earn silent treatment from the surfer in question for the rest of their career. Or, maybe surfers just take the interviews more seriously because they’re not talking to a surf journalist. Kelly Slater, interviewed by Graham Bensinger, was as transparent a piece as we’ve seen from The Champ in a long while. And Outside‘s John Florence profile, while not overly groundbreaking, is a very engaging (‘scuse the pun:) outsider’s take on John’s world.

As a bonus, the article comes with a behind-the-scenes look at the high value production employed for View From A Blue Moon (watch above!), as told by John himself, as well as Curt Morgan of Brainfarm, the company who oversaw production of what’d soon become the highest-grossing action sports film of all time.
