It’s no secret that Kelly Slater is the tour’s most prolific golf geek. On Sunday, while the majority of world tourers are tuning equipment in the unusually warm (and sharky) waters of the Australian east coast, Kelly Slater was competing at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf competition in California. And doing rather well.

Kelly’s average drive is 275 yards, compared to say, Tiger, who drives 323. But he hits it “pretty straight,” according to the man himself, so it “helps his score,” (See the PGA tour swing analyser for conformation.) The Pebble Beach Pro-Am sees celebrities paired with professional golfers in the name of charity. The vibe around the contest however, is far from fun run. Kelly Slater and German Pro Golfer Marcel Siem ended the final round in fourth overall, but it was largely due to Kelly’s performance: He finished the final round 11 under par, at Pebble Beach, which is regarded as one of the most difficult courses in the world.

The 11 time world champ shot an 11 under par 61 at Pebble beach. As Kelly brushes the twilight of his career, the PGA Champions tour (over 50’s) could well be a viable option. “In surfing you can pretty much go naked if you want to, but golf has rules. I like a bit of order and formality now and again,’ says Kelly. Keep an eye peeled for the Outerknown sustainable golf capsule that’s surely on its way – for now, the champ will stick with head to toe Puma care of his new fam at Kering Group.
