Jordy Smith’s Bending Colours

All photos Red Bull/Miller Jordy Smith’s new profile film, Bending Colours, just came to life. There’s many things you should know about this, but the most important is that it’s the best you’ve ever seen Jordy surf. A production of Red Bull Media House, realised by Kai Neville, BC wastes no dime on production value (RED cams, chopper footage, the whole party) but ain’t over-bearing. The music is unexpected (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Glass Candy, etc). Bali, Mexico, Hawaii, South Africa and more provide the canvases. There’s the must-have flashback section, in which a very gangly Jordy shows sizzle early on. Kai hasn’t tried to re-invent the biopic wheel, but really doesn’t need to. The action breaks the ground here. Especially with cameos from Julian Wilson, Josh Kerr, John Florence and Tom Curren. Then there’s Jordy. Maybe it’s because the last time you saw Jordy surfing without a contest jersey was in Lost Atlas, over a year ago. Maybe he’s been managing expectations. Whatever it is, the kid fills every gap of expectation and claim of potential that’s ever been placed on him. Speed, power and flow through wildly good combos and lines. Huh, we’re outta adjectives. Just go buy a copy from iTunes and see for yourself. Or, if you’re in Sydney next Tuesday, the film’s showing at Event Cinemas Bondi Junction at 7pm, for which tickets are available to the public. Jordy’s also gonna be there himself, hanging out and answering questions. Either way, this is something y’should treat yourself to.
